Today’s been a cold and rainy so far and even though there’s no sign of the weather heading in a brighter direction, it makes for the perfect backdrop to relaxation.

Hailing from Brussels/ Belgium is a group by the name of YellowStraps that’s been making quite the buzz on my radar for all of the right reasons. Their latest track, “Flamingo”, builds upon a smooth beat from Christoph El’ Truento and it instantly takes listeners to an airy place filled with serenity and soul. It was evident from the beginning that these newcomers have an undeniable knack for creating delicate, heartwarming works of R&B beauty, and if things are already this good then there’s no doubt in my mind that they won’t improve from here. You can hear two other tracks by heading over to soundcloud.

Savage Sister - Tiger Lamp

A few days ago a shimmering sliver of breathtaking dream pop landed in my inbox and it’s been steadily consuming me ever since.

Though the sounds of Chicago’s Savage Sister kick in a slight post punk manner, they’re immersed in gossamer tones and fueled by opulent vocals. My first impression of the band was the gorgeous single “Tiger Lamp” — which comes from the duo’s upcoming self-titled debut — and it plays through just like the most blissful of dreams. It’s a hazy, ravishing track that’s perfect for those times when you just want to relax and get away from the world and Savage Sister couldn’t have left me with any better of an impression. The new album drops on June 18th but in the meantime you can hear more material from the duo over on soundcloud and pick up what you can, including their Legs EP for $5, via bandcamp.

TV On The Radio - Mercy

While people all over the internet are still digesting the fact that Random Access Memories leaked on Monday, “fresh cuts” like this one are unfortunately flying under many radars.

The soul laden, experimental sounds of Brooklyn’s TV On The Radio have been filling my speakers with rambunctious grooves for a few years now and with the band having faced some hardship since the release of their last album, Nine Types of Light, it’s definitely nice to see them back at it again. “Mercy” is the vivacious new effort from the band and also the first from their upcoming album which will be released via Dave Sitek’s Federal Prism. The track may not be treading too much new ground but there’s a distinctive sense of rebirth overshadowing “Mercy” that makes it undeniably delightful. 2013 is looking to be the comeback year for many artists and I couldn’t be any happier to see TV On The Radio getting their share of the spotlight.

WORSHYPER - Twenties

Philadelphia’s WORSHYPER (formerly Worshipper) is easily one of the most severely underrated groups to come out last year. Their debut EP, Happened, was released back in October via Human Kindness Overflowing and all it took was the first few seconds of the opening track “Boyalty” to make me a fan of their intimate and idiosyncratic R&B tinged style.

If you’ve yet to become familiar with this fairly new trio then don’t fret because there’s still plenty of time to wish that you would have sooner. Their debut album, Keeps, is well on the way — hopefully sometime soon — and yesterday they dropped the second single from the upcoming release titled “Twenties”. Despite the fact that it’s a slight change from the mood of prior material, “Twenties” is still fresh, seductive, and the perfect tease for a full length. It’s unclear to me how this group manages to get better and better and frankly, I don’t need to know because at the end of the day I’ll eagerly be waiting for Keeps. Head over to soundcloud to hear the album’s first single, “Knots”, and visit bandcamp to grab Happened for a “name your own” price (all donations go to support Philabundance, a local food bank in Philadelphia).

Moon Bounce - Flood Gate

I’ve been fixated on the sleek, abberant sounds of Philadelphia’s Moon Bounce ever since “Telephone” made its home in my head last year and with the release of his latest EP, Wheelhouse, it’s clear that this up and coming producer is taking his particular brand of music to the next level.

On Wheelhouse, Moon Bounce (Corey Regensberg) invites listeners to waltz through a carnival of sultry, jazz textures, sporadic hip hop laced beats, and effervescent electronics. Each track shines with an individual personality yet they all finely weave throughout your ears and flow rhythm into your feet, which in turn makes Wheelhouse both extremely versatile and alluring. You can grab the EP digitally via Chill Mega Chill’s bandcamp for $5 and stream more material from Moon Bounce – including his new remix of Phoenix’s “Trying To Be Cool” – over on soundcloud.

RElyse - Nothing’s Ever Off My Mind

Further proving the fact that I just need to turn this page in a 24/7 slo jam appreciation blog is a duo hailing from New York by the name of RElyse.

Consisting of Elyse H and John K, RElyse effortlessly creates tracks that envelop listeners in a smooth, R&B laced sound that’s set to the backdrop of space age love affair. With silky vocals and ethereal textures, this duo is guaranteed to sweep you away far off into the night so be sure to head over to soundcloud to check out more material. Also, don’t hesitate to give them a like on facebook because they’ve got about 30 right now and that definitely needs to change.

Nicholas Nicholas-Video Store

I’d like to think that Ariel Pink knows magic and while it’s nothing like Harry Potter or a black mage from Final Fantasy, it’s still efficient. His best spell is spawning lo-fi bedroom pop acts that come out of nowhere and draw you in with their deep croons, romantic gazes, and all around dreamy presences and though that doesn’t seem like much, it’s completely okay with me.

While there’s no doubt in my mind that Brooklyn’s Nicholas Nicholas draws some influences from Pink, he doesn’t let them overshadow his own style. Instead of falling into the trap of sounding like a duplicate he uses these influences as a building block for Comfort Falls: a debut album that features some of the most lush and dazzling tracks that I’ve heard all year. If you’re looking to be charmed then head over to bandcamp and grab the release digitally for a “name your own price” or on CD for $4.

Tallows - Small Talk

Sincerity, intimacy, and plenty of spirit. That’s exactly what you get with Oklahoma’s Tallows and they’re only just getting started.

Given the sheer captivating nature found on their 2012 release it’s hard to believe that these two tracks are still in the demo stage, but regardless, Tallows has already ensured a spot in my bands to look out for throughout this year. You can find their track “Soft Water“on GROUPHUG’s I compilation here and if you want to grab the demo for yourselves then head over to bandcamp and pay a “name your own” price.
On facebook, Brooklyn’s Video Daughters describes their genre as swallowed teeth and after listening to the frenzied, yet meticulously composed work known as ZooS, it quickly became clear why.

What I love most about ZooS is its versatility and tendency to throw listeners for a complete curve and throughout the LP, Video Daughters shows that experimental music is way more than just a tag to be thrown onto an album. On each track the group unloads an arsenal of avant garde anthems and backs them up with off kilter electronics that’re veiled by raw punk & subtle indie rock complexions.

This may prove to be too much for some but with Video Daughters, nothing seems forced or out of place and this is what makes the band such a gem. Be sure to grab ZooS digitally for $3 or on cassette through Already Dead Tapes for $5 by heading over to bandcamp.

Ackryte-Lowry Tunnel Vision

If your ears are in dire need of something smooth then the sounds of Minneapolis’ producer Ackryte are sure to be a perfect remedy. His latest EP, Heyday, was released a few days ago and though I just came across his music this morning, Ackryte has already made an unforgettable impression.

Heyday seamlessly blends together downtempo hip hop beats with sharp, laid back jazz and layers of soul. The six tracks found on this EP are invigorating and nimble, causing the listener to become surrounded in a pensive state without ever coming off as overwhelming. You may want to settle down for this one and grab a glass of wine while you’re at it. Heyday is available for $4 via bandcamp along with plenty more material from Ackryte.

GUEST MIX: CC/NN

One half of FLASHLIGHTS & CCERULEANN and the creative force behind CC/NN.

For April’s guest mix things are getting extra funky.

(I’m a few days late in getting this up so my apologies.)

1. Vanessa - imprintafter

-This was a last minute addition. A friend, DJ baby shoe, suggested this track after he heard the others on this mix. I really enjoy this track. Really high quality chill wave with some Millionyoung like vocals.

2. Know Me (Le Chev Remix) - Frankie Rose

-My sister recently bought a record player, and one of her first purchases was a Frankie Rose 7” with this remix on the B side. Just a chilled out low tempo disco type tune. Perfect for driving or just lounging around.

3. Gold (Snakehips Bootleg) - Bondax

-The first time I heard this track I immediately thought it was off the new Justin Timberlake album, and as good as that album is, this track is leaps and bounds ahead of it. Smooth vocals with lots of awesome accent synths.

4. Scarlett Grove - Maribou State

-This track just makes me want to be dancing in the jungle with this tracks lead vocals ripping through it. The percussion is amazing, and the minimal piano chords are a nice addition. A steady groove throughout the whole track will keep you dancing, or at least doing the hipster shrug.

5. Sweet On U - Real Cosby (unreleased)

-From the new Real Cosby EP, Earl Juice, out 05/28/2013 on Shoeboxx Recordings. Real Cosby continues to drop new music that gets better and better. He is really honing his craft. His sound is familiar, yet has it’s own niche. I can’t wait for his new EP to drop. Big things happening in Colorado.

6. The Hardest Part - Kisses

-I struggled including this track, because in the beginning of it, it doesn’t seem to fit so well. But this track just has a very special feeling for me. I have no idea what that feeling is or why I have it, but I really love the combination of “indie rock” fused with some awesome bass synths, and minimal synth pads.

7. iPLayYouListen - ODESZA

-This song sucks you in with the intriguing vowel vocal chops, but keeps you cozy with some powerful undulating bass lines. It’s a nice place to be, fast enough to dance, but the feel is slow enough that you can just relax and enjoy the intricacies of the background bells.

8. Porcelain & Pewter - Vyxor

-VYXOR, what can I say about this pop genius? He’s taking contemporary electronic pop and not only injecting it with HGH, and steroids, but he’s making pop music interesting again. I LOVE pop, but it’s easy to lose yourself in it. You may not always fathom everything that went on in the track, but with Vyxor, your interest is piqued with every new crazy descending synth line or dazzling, perfectly in whack, break. I see big things for this guy in the future.

9. Shooting Holes - Twin Shadow

- The little pickup that happens after the line, “Let’s sing a song, on our way back home” is the EPIC. And I hate using that word. It’s the ultimate pick me up. It says, “Hey remember that time you were sad? You don’t? Ya me either.” Plus who doesn’t want to shoot holes at the moon.

10. I Can’t Believe You’re Leaving Me (Fulgeance Rework) - The Bar Kays

-This last song is another gem found by DJ babyshoe. The intro of this rework leads you to believe that you are in for a simple relaxing vibe throughout, but if you aren’t dancing like a crazy person to the sprinkler hi-hat’s and bass groove about forty seconds in, then you might want to check your pulse.

oOoOO-Stay Here ft ML
While I usually don’t make posts...

oOoOO-Stay Here ft ML

While I usually don’t make posts this late, tracks as eerie as this just beg to be played well after the sun has set. “Stay Here” is the latest track from Chris Dexter aka oOoOO and it’s the first from his upcoming LP, Without Your Love, which is scheduled to drop via his new label Nihjgt Feelings on June 24th.

While many have said that oOoOO’s dreary, electronic sound would soon grow stale, “Stay Here” — along with ML’s enchanting vocals — proves otherwise. Dexter’s haunting, R&B infused style of production is foreboding yet enthralling, and though this track doesn’t tread new ground, it’s evident that this twenty something is steadily inching towards making his distinctive presence known. Check out his soundcloud to hear more.

Phoenix-Entertainment (Blood Orange Remix)
While I’ve been...

Phoenix-Entertainment (Blood Orange Remix)

While I’ve been eagerly awaiting a follow up to 2011’s Coastal Grooves for awhile now, Blood Orange is clearly showing no signs of slowing down. When Dev Hynes isn’t working his production magic for people like Solange or Sky Fereirra, he’s busy churning out enticing remixes like this rework of Phoenix’s comeback single “Entertainment”, proving that his finesse is undeniable and alluring to say the least. Though the track retains fragments of the original, the addition of illuminating synths, funky basslines and lavish vocal work — courtesy of London girl group MKS — transforms “Entertainment” into a song that’s pounding with a sensual and vibrant R&B flair. The remix is more my style so for that reason alone I think it’s a tad bit better but regardless, it’s a damn good track. If you’re digging it as much as I am then head over to soundcloud and grab the track for free.

Keep Shelly In Athens-Madmen Love
I’ll always remember...

Keep Shelly In Athens-Madmen Love

I’ll always remember when I first fell in love with the Athens based duo known as Keep Shelly In Athens. It all started as soon as I heard the perpetually ethereal and seductive sounds of “Running Out Of You” sometime a few years ago and from that moment on, aside from the band’s growth , not much has changed. This coming fall Keep Shelly In Athens will be making their Cascine debut in the form of a much anticipated full length LP. ”Madmen Love” is the first cut from the album and even with its industrial nature and ominous atmosphere, the track still seems like it was crafted in the most radiant part of heaven. No release date or title has been set for the upcoming album yet but you can still head over to soundcloud in the meantime to get your temporary fill of Keep Shelly In Athens.

GUEST POST: IT CAUGHT MY EAR

It was March 2011 when I noticed I really enjoyed music, like really enjoyed it.

Posting quotes from my favorite songs and annoying my Facebook friends became too much, so I chose somewhere else to display my music finds by blogging.

After a few good months into my new found hobby, somehow I got picked up by a website that was being seen read by some big names that I won’t name. I became the one of the many who succumbed to striving to be a “blog star”. What I was doing at that time was hindering me and I could notice myself becoming obsessed with first-posting, getting page-views, looking all-so-cool boasting my “music IQ”, and basically posting music that I never cared about. My taste was changing due to my acceptance of genres that were new to me.

Eventually, I weened away from that negative energy and revamped the original ideas that I began back when I started blogging — and now I’m here. On my own I started It Caught My Ear within May of last year, it’s quite a refreshing feeling displaying what I really, really enjoy and meeting friends along the way. It’s great to see people finding out about my blog and telling me that I enjoying what I post. I’m not sure how long that I’ll keep this going, however my main goal is to have fun while doing throughout its run …

Here are some songs that are swirling around my mind at the moment. Big thanks to Jon for selecting me to contribute a guest post to Cassette Rewind.

While bands like Tame Impala and Ducktails are steadily keeping psychedelic music alive and well with their latest releases, LA’s Morgan Delt is driving the hazy, reverb filled sounds of the genre to the brink of hallucination. On his debut album, Psychic Death Hole, Delt slowly strips listeners of their sanity and then casts them into a vast, blistering desert and though the release easily sounds like a drug induced nightmare, it’s tenebrousity is perfectly balanced with layers of underlying vibrancy. You can pick up the album now by heading over to bandcamp and paying $4 for a digital copy or $4.50 for a cassette copy.

Wild Nothing-A Dancing Shell

Damn you Jack Tatum, you’ve done it again. Only months after the release of their sophomore LP, Nocturne, Wild Nothing is gearing up to drop a brand new EP titled Empty Estate on May 14th. Along with the news came the single, “A Dancing Shell”, which sports a nice little change in style for the band. While you’re keeping the track on repeat, peep the video below and prepare for Wild Nothing to dazzle us all over again. Limitied edition vinyl packages are available now through Captured Tracks for $22 and with all of the nifty stuff that comes with the record, it’d make a great addition to any collection.

April is almost over but like always, there’s still time for a mixtape. This one is titled SPECTЯUM and since I don’t really have too much to say this time around, I’ll just say enjoy the music. Thanks to all of the featured artists and Sishir Bommakanti as well for letting me use his wonderful design “Canyons and End Map” for the cover.

It’s been a few months since my last behind the tracks feature and since I’ve been a fan of this band ever since starting this blog, I couldn’t think of a more fitting group to interview. I recently caught up with Ben Martin, one half of Austin R&B/electronic duo Young Pharaohs, to talk about everything from the band’s beginnings as King Mob to their memorable SXSW experience last month and of course, what’s in store for the future. If you haven’t heard of this up and coming band by now then now should be the time.

CR: So Young Pharaohs signed with Chill Mega Chill in early 2012 but before that the band was known as King Mob. Was that because of a change in direction or did the name just not fit anymore?

BM: Yeah, we liked the name King Mob, but it’s always a battle when you pick a name that belongs to something preexisting - in that case, a comic book character and prior to that an anarchist movement. There were always other King Mobs starting up around the world, which was a hassle. We were at a point where we felt like everything we had written up to that point had been like the “training wheels” version of what we actually wanted to be doing. I come from a post-punk background, and it was pretty presumptuous of me to think that I could just get behind a computer and make a masterpiece on my first try. Electronic music plays by a completely different set of rules than guitar music, and it took me a long time to adjust. I’m still adjusting, really. Learning about the potential of electronic music and how I fit in as a composer and performer using those tools, it’s a never ending process of learning and exploration.

So we used the jump to Chill Mega Chill as a sort of “re-launch” of our group and sound. In terms of what we would consider “cannon” Young Pharaohs tunes, it starts with White Shadows. Everything else before that was just a warm up.

CR: With that being said about thinking you could make a masterpiece on your first try, do you feel that since a majority of electronic music is based around a laptop in some form or another, that a lot of people were like yourself in the beginning and view the genre as something that they can instantly pick up and get?

BM: Yeah, I mean, I think coming to electronic music with some baggage from playing other genres in the past comes with both advantages and disadvantages. I think the worst thing you can say about most programs people use to make electronic music is that they encourage certain actions on a compositional level and discourage others. As a simple example, it’s a lot easier to do tempo changes with a live band than it is with laptop music. With a live band you just do it. Not that I *can’t* make Ableton Live do a tempo change, but it’s not something that’s going to happen intuitively. I have to really want to make it happen. Vise-verse, with a rock band it’s a lot more difficult to play with texture and get anything texturally near what you can accomplish easily with a computer. It’s a different set of tools, and like any tool it takes time to master or even become competent at. Some rock music people look down on electronic music as a lesser form or something because all they see is the deficits. That point of view seems absurd in 2013, but it was more popular when I started transitioning my thinking on the matter.

What’s nice is that my time playing and studying other types of music help me to more easily think “outside the box” in terms of other composition and performance possibilities other than what’s encouraged in a sometimes dogmatic and strangely conservative electronic music scene.

CR: I found it interesting when you said that you came from a post punk background because Young Pharaohs’ sound seems like it’d be rooted in R&B from the past few decades.

BM: Well, for sure Sam and I were definitely checking out some Puff Daddy and Mase and TLC and shit on Much Music back in the day. Does Much Music still exist? It was like the Canadian MTV.

At the time I thought it was better, but looking back it was probably exactly the same. That was before I was playing music though, so it took like an extra decade for my R&B roots to blossom again. I gotta give it up to Sam, he kept the flame alive through most of the 2000s. He was all about that nu-soul, Musiq Soulchild business.

CR: So how did you and Sam decide that you two wanted to be in a band together? Being brothers, I’m sure that you two have no problem vibing off of each other.

BM: Haha, actually sometimes we have a really hard time vibing off each other! Sam and I approach music very differently. He works intuitively whereas I tend to be measured and logical. I’m primarily concerned with melody and harmony, he’s more focused on textures and the production end of things. We started making music together for that very reason: We each saw skills the other had that would make ourselves better. We also hold each other up to a really high standard. The dynamic between the two of us makes us a way better band in the long run, but for a while it seemed like we were so different that we were having trouble communicating our ideas with each other.

Right now, I feel like we’ve reached a plateau in terms communication in the studio. This is the best we’ve ever been able to articulate our ideas to each other, both in words and musically. The tunes are getting better because of it. As brothers, there’s a real competitive edge sometimes, and it took both of us some time at the beginning to be totally comfortable around the other, just throwing our a random stupid idea or part. That’s pretty much gone now. We have a great time making complete fools of ourselves in the studio these days, just making shit up.

CR: You guys recently dropped two new singles, “I Do” & “Don’t Go Down”. Besides the tracks being better musically, how would you say they differ from the material on White Shadows?

BM: With White Shadows we were still trying to figure out who were were and what we sounded like. We were still defining our boundaries. I think the biggest difference with the new tracks is that we know and our listeners know to a certain extent what sandbox we’ll be playing in. In other words, when you first heard White Shadows, you probably had no idea what to expect. It could have been anything.

By now, you have a certain preconceived notion about what Young Pharaohs sounds like before you press play. It’s the same way for us: When we were working on White Shadows, we were still answering the question, “Who are we?” Now that we’re past that we can more comfortably start to ask questions like “What do we want to say?” and “How do we mutate or modulate our sound?” I’d like to think that the songs are more mature now that we’re comfortable in our own skin. With White Shadows we were picking our path. Now we get to walk it.

CR: I couldn’t do this interview without asking about SXSW. Young Pharaohs happened to be one of the many relatively new bands at the festival so explain how the whole experience was for you and how you prepped for such a huge event?

BM: SXSW is just a straight trip through and through, and it was especially a trip doing it from the inside, since we live in Austin now. This town turns completely upside down for about a week and a half. Between seeing shows, playing shows, doing movie premieres (SXSW is a film festival too!), and the drinking, and did I mention the drinking, it’s a gauntlet, but a wonderful, fabulous, inspiring gauntlet. We didn’t have to prep too hard this year. We were already playing a new set, so it was more just a matter of making sure we coordinated shit so we could be at the right place at the right time with our gear.

We unfortunately weren’t able to play as many shows as we would have wanted this year, because Sam got a new job a week before SXSW that required him to work pretty much every day of the festival. That was kind of a bummer, but whatever, we brought the party to the shows we did play, and I got to see and do a bunch of other cool business too. Highlights included hanging out with Njena Redd Foxxx, playing putt-putt with Blue Hawaii, getting to see Solange twice, a Q&A with Rob Zombie, and lounging around on a 6th-floor fancy outdoor pool with the Portals crew. The day after SXSW my girlfriend and I had 50 people over to our house for waffles. That was real.

CR: I think experiences like that is what makes SXSW really stand apart from all of the other festivals. There’s just a lot more freedom and whoever you are, it tends to be unforgettable.

So this year has clearly already been a good one in music so far. What does 2013 mean for Young Pharaohs and if I may ask, is it possible that there’s going to be any sort of follow up release to White Shadows in the near future?

BM: This is a big year for us. At least as things stand now, I don’t think you’ll be seeing a full length follow up to White Shadows anytime soon. Rather we’re going to be following the “I Do // Don’t Go Down” release pattern for now: 2 tracks at a time, every 2 months or so, for free. In 2013 Young Pharaohs is going hard and fast. You’re gonna hear a lot of new tunes from us all year long. More than anything, we want our music out to as many ears as possible.

So expect our next tracks to be in your ears by the end of May, and then a LOT more where that came from for the rest of the year. We’re in a really exciting place right now with our new jams. We’re in the studio almost every day just working away happy as clams. I’m actually listening to the jam that’s probably going to be our next single right now. It feels really hot. I can’t wait for you to hear it.

You can hear more from Young Pharaohs by visiting their soundcloud or bandcamp page and if you want grab a cassette copy of White Shadows then head over to Chill Mega Chill’s bandcamp to grab one for $5. Also, be sure to give the band a like on facebook to keep updated.

SOHN-Bloodflows

If you were SOHN then I imagine that you’d be riding pretty high right about now. Not only did the London/Vienna based artist just sign to 4AD earlier today, but his new track “Bloodflows” finally received some breathtaking visuals to accompany its already gorgeous nature. SOHN’s hypnotizing R&B sound is spine tingling to say the least and if you’ve yet to become familiar with this up and coming crooner then I’d recommend taking the time out of your Friday to change that. Be sure to visit soundcloud to hear more material and if you want to buy a copy of SOHN’s previous release, The Wheel, then head here to pick up a copy on vinyl or via iTunes.
