It’s been a few months since my last behind the tracks feature and since I’ve been a fan of this band ever since starting this blog, I couldn’t think of a more fitting group to interview. I recently caught up with Ben Martin, one half of Austin R&B/electronic duo Young Pharaohs, to talk about everything from the band’s beginnings as King Mob to their memorable SXSW experience last month and of course, what’s in store for the future. If you haven’t heard of this up and coming band by now then now should be the time.

Being one of the better parts of my random bandcamp searches, I was instantly drawn into the lush, synth driven R&B esque sounds of 19 year old Virginia resident Bradd Haynes, aka Mosaicc, right from the start. His latest EP “What Happened” appealed to me on not only a musical level, but a personal level as well and soon after hearing it, I proceeded to try and get my ears on as much of his material as I could. This year started out kind of hectic for me and I was starting to think that I wouldn’t be able to do a BTT feature done for this month but regardless, here I am, and for the eighth installment in the series I was lucky enough to get in touch with Bradd and get to know a bit more about the guy behind the alias of Mosaicc.

For my last behind the tracks feature of the year I decided to get in touch with a duo hailing from Austin, Texas by the name of Silkies. The band, Lira Mondal and Caufield Schnug, has a unique style that’s driven by an exuberant punk nature, garage rock grittiness, and upbeat pop harmonies that’re reminiscent of decades past. Their debut EP, Like One, was recently released on Young Latitudes and Heart Throb Records and though it’s only three tracks long, it’s been spinning in my ears for days now. Silkies has had my attention ever since I first came across them a few weeks back and I’m certain that it won’t be long before they get yours as well.

The main purpose of every one of these “behind the tracks” posts or interviews is to introduce new music to all of you along with getting to know the artists behind it just a bit more and see what’s in store for them. Every month I try to get in touch with two bands or musicians that I feel deserve to get some attention and what better place to get that then through the internet or better yet, tumblr. I happen across new artists just about every day or so, but this one in particular stuck out and grabbed a hold of my attention with a sound that’s both unique and mystifying. So for my second feature I decided to have a chat with Thomas Thorson, the man behind the future pop/ electronic sounds of Portland based project Interiors, and talk about upcoming releases, favorite albums of the year, The Dark Arts Festival held in Oregon earlier this year, and a little bit more. I can’t think of a proper way to end this, so like Mario says in Mario 64 “Heeere we goooo!!!”

With technology growing at such a rapid pace lately there are tons of artists who are using that to their advantage and expanding the boundaries of what can be done with music. The idea of “diy” is looking to become something that’s gaining plenty of notoriety in the underground and even if you’re one of those people who don’t agree with it, you can’t deny that it’s steadily growing strong. As far as I’m concerned, age isn’t a huge factor in regards to music or ability and 17 year old British Columbia resident Brennan Henderson doesn’t seem to think so either. Although he hasn’t been on the scene for long, his first full length album Far Off Sights (released a few days ago) is sure to turn a few heads with it’s ambient, bedroom pop style and slightly odd nature. So enough with this intro, let me better acquaint you with James Deen.

For my second behind the tracks feature of the month I decided to get in contact with a long time favorite producer of mine, Tokyo’s own Taquwami. My ears have been filled with quality dreamy pop magic ever since I heard his single “With You” and take it from me, you certainly don’t want to miss out on anything coming from this guy. He’s recently signed to the brand new label Void Youth and as of last week dropped his first EP Blurrywonder so this post couldn’t have happened at a better time. I’ve got to give him a huge thank you for helping me with this all the way from Japan and he couldn’t have been any nicer. So sit back and get to know the person behind Taquwami a little better.
