SPF 420: The internet showcase that you should be talking about
This is something that I’ve been waiting for even before I knew that it existed. Being someone who doesn’t have a car, yet loves seeing live shows, I often miss when artists happen to come around my area but the great thing about this event, SPF420, is that it all takes place online.
SPF420is an audio/visual experience that started late last year and tonight will mark the third web based showcase to date. With so many artists floating around the internet lately, this probably has to be one of the best concepts for live entertainment that I’ve heard about in awhile and since you really don’t even have to move anywhere (or get dressed for that matter) there’s no reason why you shouldn’t check this out unless you still have dial up. The roster features a couple of personal favorites such as Magic Fades, Veracom, Contact Lens, and Vektroid  and along with Kodak Cameo, DJ Paypal, and Blackedout all set to play throughout the night, SPF420 is definitely looking to be one hell of a good and sexy time. While people will be rambling about their SXSW experience you can look like the even cooler friend and say that you attended SPF420 . So mark it in your phones or do whatever you have to do and be sure to join this tinychat room tonight at 10pm!
One of the event’s organizers, Stress, will be hosting the event while its other organizer, Chaz Allen aka Metallic Ghosts, will be the house DJ under the alias SUGAR C. Also, if you’re still glued to your computer screens (which you probably will be) then don’t miss out on the slowrave afterparty curated by Transmuteo.
Check out a trailer for the event below and listen to an interview/guest mix that Stress did for Drifts a few nights back here.

Love Grows

VERACOM -

VERACOM-Love Grows

Even though it’s been thrown around for awhile now, I still have no idea quite what “vaporwave” is and that’s probably why I usually shy away from using the term in a serious context. Internet labels aside though, there’s something downright smooth and enrapturing about the sounds of Texas producer Ryan Groch, better known by his alias VERACOM, and I can’t help but to get caught up in just about everything that comes from him. His latest single “Love Grows” features a sample from Mariah Carey and if you’re thinking “how does that even work?” then you need to sit back and let the music speak for itself. With it’s heavy 90’s R&B esque vibe, “Love Grows” is saturated in sex appeal, and that, along with VERACOM’s rich and silky style, is a combination guaranteed to make your body melt. Check out more material from VERACOM over on soundcloud and follow the links in the sidebar to grab his AMDISCS s/t release as well as his Young Latitudes split with Magic Fades.

Obsession

Magic Fades - Obsession

Magic Fades-Obsession

I was first introduced to the steamy r&b sounds of Portland duo Magic Fades earlier this year when I heard their track “I’ll Adjust” on their Young Latitudes split with Veracom and ever since then I’ve been drawn to everything that these two have put out. There’s no question about it that r&b has been quite a popular thing this year, both in the “mainstream” and underground, but the magical thing about Magic Fades is that their approach to the genre never falls short of coming off as ardent, smooth, and seductive. The duo is getting ready to release their debut LP Obsession on January 8th via Mishka and earlier today they dropped the title track from the album to get all of us fans ready for what’s to come. You may notice that the track samples Brandy and Monica’s ‘98 hit “The Boy Is Mine” and while I never thought that I’d hear that anytime soon, Magic Fades makes it work completely in their favor. There’s an enticing, lascivious nature surrounding “Obsession” that makes it irresistible right from the start and to be honest, after playing this song about a dozen or so times today, I couldn’t be anymore stoked on this album than I already am. Check out Magic Fades on soundcloud to hear more material while you’re getting ready for Obsession to drop and if you haven’t yet, swing by their bandcamp page to grab the four track release She Beat All The Haters for a name your own price.

BEHIND THE TRACKS: INTERIORS

The main purpose of every one of these “behind the tracks” posts or interviews is to introduce new music to all of you along with getting to know the artists behind it just a bit more and see what’s in store for them. Every month I try to get in touch with two bands or musicians that I feel deserve to get some attention and what better place to get that then through the internet or better yet, tumblr. I happen across new artists just about every day or so, but this one in particular stuck out and grabbed a hold of my attention with a sound that’s both unique and mystifying. So for my second feature I decided to have a chat with Thomas Thorson, the man behind the future pop/ electronic sounds of Portland based project Interiors, and talk about upcoming releases, favorite albums of the year, The Dark Arts Festival held in Oregon earlier this year, and a little bit more. I can’t think of a proper way to end this, so like Mario says in Mario 64 “Heeere we goooo!!!”
