Sad Sad Trip

Morgan Delt - Psychic Death Hole

Morgan Delt-Sad Sad Trip

While bands like Tame Impala and Ducktails are steadily keeping psychedelic music alive and well with their latest releases, LA’s Morgan Delt is driving the hazy, reverb filled sounds of the genre to the brink of hallucination. On his debut album, Psychic Death Hole, Delt slowly strips listeners of their sanity and then casts them into a vast, blistering desert and though the release easily sounds like a drug induced nightmare, it’s tenebrousity is perfectly balanced  with layers of underlying  vibrancy. You can pick up the album now by heading over to bandcamp and paying $4 for a digital copy or $4.50 for a cassette copy.

Close

Sun Airway - Soft Fall

Sun Airway-Close

I have a habit of liking bands on facebook immediately after I hear a song that I like from them but the problem with this is that sometimes I forget these groups until they pop back up on my news feed again. Today this actually worked in my favor though because I rediscovered the sounds of Philadelphia duo Sun Airway and also picked up word of their second LP Soft Fall, which is due out on the second of October. “Close” is the first taste from that album and I couldn’t have picked a better time than now to get back into the band. They’ve been compared to the likes of Animal Collective (during their Merriweather Post Pavilion days) and The Strokes but I think Sun Airway has a sound that’s completely their own. “Close” hits hard right from the beginning with an infectious indie rock vibe that’s accompanied by small doses of psychedelic and dream pop to make things even more colorful. At it’s core what you get is a fast paced, heartfelt track that’s undeniably catchy and fun and I for one can’t wait to hear Soft Fall in it’s entirety. Before I end this I’ve got to give a quick shout out to the brief sax parts throughout the song, because well who doesn’t love a good and sexy saxophone? October is definitely shaping up to be another great month in music.

Apocalypse Dreams

Tame Impala - Apocalypse Dreams

Tame Impala-Apocalypse Dreams

Kevin Parker has been a busy man lately. He’s been in the studio mixing and recording with Melody Prochet of Melody’s Echo Chamber (check out “Crystallized”) and also working on new material with his psych rock outfit Tame Impala. Earlier this week the band dropped news of a sophomore record titled Lonerism and with that came a new track from the LP titled “Apocalypse Dreams”. Of course when I found out about this I had to visit Pitchfork to hear the single for myself and needless to say, I was thoroughly impressed. If you thought that 2010’s Innerspeaker was as good as it gets then you’re certainly mistaken because Tame Impala has only improved on their blissful style of psychedelia pop since then. I promise that I’m completely sober at the moment but when I put on “Apocalypse Dreams” it’s like I’m in a completely different state of mind. If you think I’m just over exaggerating then listen to the track for yourself and I’m sure that you’ll catch my drift. You can grab the song for free via Pitchfork and expect the group to drop the next single “Elephant” later this month. Lonerism is scheduled for an October release through Modular People.

I'll Come Back 4 U

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Adult Swim 2012 Single Series

Unknown Mortal Orchestra-I’ll Come Back 4 U

Ever since 2010 Adult Swim has been running a single series where various  artists contribute a fresh track for our listening pleasure. It started as eight songs across the span of eight weeks and has now grown to twelve. This time around the series features bands like Wye Oak, Wavves, Flying Lotus, etc. and so far things are off to a great start with a group that burst onto the scene last year, Unknown Mortal Orchestra. I had the satisfaction of catching these guys live back in November when they toured with Toro y Moi and they certainly delivered with their unique style of psychedelic pop and funk. Anyways, “I’ll Come Back 4 U” is the latest thing the guys have dropped since their self titled debut LP and that’s most likely why I’m so excited to hear it. It’s not a far cry from their usual sound and that’s absolutely fine with me but it does have somewhat of an R&B groove about it that helps to carry the track along nicely. You can download “I’ll Come Back 4 U” along with the past two series in their entirety for free over at Adult Swim’s website. Also be sure to stream Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s debut LP via Spotify.

I Want More

French Kissing -

French Kissing-I Want More

Get your day started off right with a song about girls and feelings. “I Want More” comes from London three piece French Kissing, another gem that I discovered while looking around bandcamp. Their sounds is a mixture lo fi garage rock with a chilled out surf vibe and a good bit of 60’s psychedelic pop. They’ve just released two singles, “Love Is For” and “Wild Women” as double A sides which are available for streaming on their bandcamp page. You can also pick up this track there as well for free.
